Dr. Stephen Michael Mackinnon sent home my cousin (husband and father of two daughters) who came into Centenary Hospital with complaints of chest pain radiating to his back and had a significant history for abdominal aortic aneurysm. Dr. Mackinnnon gave him milk of mag, lidocaine, Protonix, Toradol while in the ED, sent him home with Protonix and a follow-up ultrasound to rule out gallstones the following day. Tragically, he never made it to that appointment. He passed away at home the next day from an aortic dissection. My cousin should NOT have been sent home by this negligent ED physician. He required immediate transfer to a facility capable of comprehensive evaluation and emergent surgical intervention. I firmly believe that had Dr. Mackinnon taken the appropriate steps, his life could have been saved. My cousin would still be alive today. I cannot help but wonder how many more patients has Dr. Mackinnon sent home and passed away the following day? There has to be accountability. The fundamental ethical directive guiding healthcare providers worldwide also known as the Hippocratic Oath: "Do No Harm". Dr. Stephen Michael Mackinnon failed to live by his oath.
