This is how GRH psych ward impacted my life. In 2021 my daughter was taken to 1F after I brought her to St. Mary’s Emergency asking for help. Her name is Madisyn Solomon and she was held involuntarily. She was suffering severe adverse reactions to lorazepam and Lexapro prescribed by her family doctor. I trusted the hospital to intervene responsibly, stabilize her, and return her to us. Instead, they took control and shut us out. Because it was during COVID, I was not allowed to stay with her. I was not allowed to advocate for her, protect her, or even witness what was being done to her. She was isolated and powerless in a system that claims to care. The psychiatrist, Dr. Williams, continued prescribing drugs. The first caused suicidal ideation—something we were never warned about. No family meeting. No transparency. We were kept in the dark. GRH kept her for six days. The psychiatrist Dr. Williams continued on with new drugs. Two weeks after starting pregabalin, my daughter died by suicide, alone in her bedroom. She died while in full drug induced psychosis. Her brain hijacked in an impulsive moment. Her postmortem urine showed a strong presence of pregabalin. That is not a coincidence—it is a devastating failure. Pregabalin is acknowledged in other jurisdictions for suicidal ideation, hallucination and addiction. A quick google search is all it takes to find that out. Since her death, I have learned far more about psychiatry than I ever wanted to. I also remained in contact with Madisyn’s former 1F roommate . He’s dead now too. When multiple young people leave the same unit and end up dead, this is not “help.” It is systemic harm. From where I stand, psychiatry didn’t save my daughter’s life—it played a role in ending it. After my daughter’s death, Dr. Williams refused to meet with us. I attended a fundraiser just to meet her. Imagine, having to track down the psychiatrist whose care your daughter was under by paying $800 to attend a fundraiser! I gave her a letter. My hope is that she always remembers my daughter and it inspires her to evoke positive change. She has since been promoted to chief of psychiatry. The only justice we ever received was a letter of apology from GRH for not having a family meeting. I had to request this letter and it was provided after the statute of limitations ran out (two years).
